Chiang Mai is approximately 700km north of Bangkok and 1027ft above sea-level, which gives the area a cooler and drier climate. There are about 300 temples constructed in Chiang Mai & its outskirts, which reflect the varied heritage of Northern Thailand. Other attractions are its close proximity to neighbouring provinces like Chiang Rai, Phayao, Lampang, Lampun & Mae Hong Son, as well as to countries like Myanmar (Burma) and Laos. It is also famous for lacquer ware, pottery & woodcarving.
